🥈 The Complete Silver Price Guide for Germany

Live valuation of physical silver in Germany across all common fineness levels (999, 925, 900, 835), tracking the COMEX futures exchange and the London Bullion Market (LBMA). Unlike gold, silver trades as both a safe-haven and an industrial metal — more than half of annual global production goes into electronics, solar panels, and electric vehicles, which tends to make the silver price more volatile than gold.

⚠️ Important: 19% VAT on silver, gold is tax-exempt

Under § 25c UStG, investment gold is treated as a tax-exempt financial instrument. Silver, however, is legally treated as an ordinary commodity — new bars and coins are subject to the full 19% VAT. Profits from privately selling physical silver still remain 100% tax-free after a holding period of more than one year (§ 23 EStG), just like gold.

Frequently Asked Questions About Silver Price

Answers to the most important questions about silver prices, buying, and taxes in Germany.

How is today's silver price determined in Germany?
The silver price is set internationally in US dollars per troy ounce on the COMEX futures exchange and the London Bullion Market (LBMA). This price is converted to Euro at the current EUR/USD exchange rate, then divided by 31.1035 grams (one troy ounce) to get the price per gram.
What is the difference between 999, 925 and 835 silver?
The number indicates the fine-silver content per 1000 parts. 999 (fine silver) contains 99.9% pure silver and is used for investment bars and coins. 925 (sterling silver) contains 92.5% silver, with the remainder mostly copper for added hardness — common in jewelry and fine tableware. 835 and 800 are less pure and typically found in traditional German silverware and antiques.
Why does silver carry 19% VAT in Germany while gold is exempt?
Under § 25c UStG, investment gold (995 fineness or higher) is classified as a tax-exempt financial instrument. Silver, despite being a precious metal, is legally classified as an ordinary commodity and is subject to the full 19% VAT when buying new bars or coins. This makes the entry cost for physical silver relatively higher than gold.
Are profits from selling silver tax-free in Germany?
Yes. Under § 23 EStG, profits from selling physical silver (bars or coins) held as private assets for more than one year are 100% tax-free — just like gold. Selling within one year is subject to an annual tax-free allowance of €1,000 in profit.
Is silver a good investment compared to gold?
Silver is more volatile than gold (the gold/silver ratio has historically ranged between 40 and 100) and is strongly tied to industrial demand (electronics, solar panels, electric vehicles) in addition to its role as a safe haven. This makes silver more sensitive to the economic cycle than gold, with potentially larger swings over shorter periods.
Where can I safely buy physical silver in Germany?
Certified silver bars and coins (e.g. American Silver Eagle, Silver Krügerrand, Vienna Philharmonic Silver) are available from licensed precious-metal dealers, specialized banks, or trusted online platforms offering secure storage or shipping. It's always worth comparing the premium (Aufgeld) over spot price before buying.
How does industrial demand affect the silver price?
Unlike gold, which is mainly used for investment and jewelry, over 50% of annual silver production is consumed by industry — especially electronics, semiconductors, and photovoltaics. This makes the silver price more correlated with global economic growth and renewable-energy expansion than the gold price.
