Buying Gold (Investment)
When buying investment gold (bars and coins) in Germany, the price you pay includes the dealer's premium (Aufgeld) over the spot price. Always compare premiums across dealers. Investment gold is 100% exempt from VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) under § 25c UStG.

If you sell old jewelry or dental gold, dealers calculate the payout based on the pure gold content. You will generally receive 85% to 95% of the spot value, as dealers deduct fees for melting and refining. According to § 23 EStG, profits from selling physical gold are tax-free if you held the gold for more than one year.
