Key facts

  • 750 gold is exactly 75 % gold — 18 of 24 karat.
  • Colour depends on the additions: silver and copper give yellow gold, excess copper red gold, palladium or nickel white gold.
  • At around 150 HV it is durable in daily wear yet workable — the reason it dominates premium jewellery.
  • New purchases attract 19 % VAT; the investment gold exemption does not cover jewellery.
  • Scrap buyers typically deduct 5–12 % in refining charges from intrinsic value.

How this price is calculated

There is no separate exchange quote for individual alloys. Every karat price is derived from the fine gold rate, and the arithmetic is fully open:

‎$۴٬۳۷۹٫۰۰ / 31,1035 g = ‎$۱۴۰٫۷۹
‎$۱۴۰٫۷۹ × ۰٫۸۷۲۶ = ‎€۱۲۲٫۸۵
‎€۱۲۲٫۸۵ × ۰٫۷۵۰ = ‎€۹۲٫۱۴

Every figure on this page comes from exactly this formula.

What defines 750 gold

750 parts gold per 1,000 — exactly three quarters, or 18 karat. The remaining 250 parts determine colour and behaviour. Classic yellow gold uses 12.5 % each of silver and copper. Red gold shifts the ratio toward copper; white gold replaces it with palladium or, in cheaper alloys, nickel.

These colour variants are standardised in DIN EN ISO 8654. They make no difference to price: yellow, red or white, the gold content stays 75 %, and that is what a buyer pays for. A palladium white gold ring may have cost more to make but fetches the same intrinsic value as a yellow gold ring of equal weight.

At roughly 150 HV and a density near 15.5 g/cm³, 750 hits the point where a piece survives daily wear, settings hold stones securely, and the gold tone remains unmistakably rich. Hence its use from Cartier to Wempe.

One practical note on white gold: almost all 750 white gold jewellery is rhodium-plated to mask the natural greyish cast. That layer wears through in two to five years and needs renewing. This is normal, not a defect.

Where 750 gold is used

Wedding and engagement rings. The German standard in the premium segment. Hardness suffices for decades of daily wear without engravings fading or stones loosening.

Watch cases. Rolex, Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Söhne and effectively every manufacture uses 750 for gold cases. A case can weigh 30 to over 100 grams — a meaningful melt value, but almost always far below the watch's market value. Never sell a branded watch as scrap.

Designer jewellery. Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany and German houses work in 750. Intact, identifiable pieces with certificates regularly exceed intrinsic value by a wide margin.

Southern European jewellery. In Italy, Spain and France, 750 is standard even for everyday pieces — unlike Germany, where 585 dominates. Inherited items from those countries are frequently 18 karat.

Buying 750 gold

At a jeweller you pay intrinsic value plus workmanship plus 19 % VAT. On simple pieces the metal share of the retail price is often 30–50 %; on designer items considerably less. That is not a rip-off — it is design, manufacturing, retail and warranty — but it explains why jewellery works poorly as an investment.

On the second-hand market the VAT burden largely disappears where the dealer applies the margin scheme under § 25a UStG. Well-kept pre-owned pieces are therefore often the economically sensible entry if you want the object rather than the box.

Check at purchase: a 750 mark present, weight in grams on the invoice, rhodium plating noted for white gold, and separate certificates for stones. You will need these later for insurance and resale.

Selling 750 gold

The buyer calculates weight × 0.750 × fine gold rate, less refining charges. Reputable German buyers pay 88–95 % of that intrinsic value. The spread covers refining, melt loss and margin.

Before any melt sale, check whether the piece is worth more as jewellery. Branded, designer and antique items and anything with meaningful stones do not belong in a crucible. A Cartier bangle with €40 grams of metal value can be worth a multiple as jewellery.

Stones, pearls and springs are removed or deducted. Reputable buyers return diamonds or value them separately — agree in writing beforehand how they will be handled.

For white gold, the rhodium layer is irrelevant to valuation. What counts is gold content, and in 750 white gold that is likewise 75 %.

What a dealer actually pays out

Intrinsic value is the ceiling, not the payout. Buyers deduct refining charges and keep a trading margin. The range below is realistic for this fineness:

Item per gram for 10 g
Intrinsic value (fine gold content) ‎€۹۲٫۱۴ ‎€۹۲۱٫۳۹
Realistic payout — upper end −۵٫۰ % ‎€۸۷٫۵۳ ‎€۸۷۵٫۳۲
Realistic payout — lower end −۱۲٫۰ % ‎€۸۱٫۰۸ ‎€۸۱۰٫۸۲

Rule of thumb: get at least two written quotes and watch the item being weighed. A reputable buyer states the fine gold rate used, the weight in grams and the deduction as separate lines — a single lump sum is impossible to compare.

German tax treatment of 750 gold

19 % VAT on new goods. Jewellery does not meet the investment gold definition of § 25c UStG, which covers bars from 995/1000 and qualifying coins from 900/1000 — not worked jewellery, however fine.

Margin scheme (§ 25a UStG). Buying pre-owned from a dealer, only their margin is taxed. VAT is then not separately stated on the invoice — no input tax deduction for you, but a lower final price.

Tax-free sale after one year. § 23 EStG treats jewellery like bars: held more than a year, the gain is income-tax free. Within the year, the €1,000 per calendar year threshold applies, raised from €600 for assessment periods from 2024.

Commercial trading. Anyone buying and selling regularly can be classified as a commercial dealer, triggering trade tax and VAT liability and making the holding period irrelevant. The line is case-dependent — beyond occasional sales, take tax advice.

Testing 750 gold

The mark. Usually 750, 18K or 18kt, on the ring interior, chain clasp or catch. German law makes hallmarking voluntary, so a missing mark does not mean a piece is fake.

X-ray fluorescence. The buyer's standard: non-destructive, instant, precise on solid material. On plated pieces it reads only the coating, so a spot is filed as well.

Acid streak test. Test acids for 333, 585, 750 and 900 indicate approximate fineness by dissolution speed. Colour judgement is harder on white gold but the method still works.

Magnet test. Gold, silver, copper and palladium are non-magnetic. A piece that clings to a neodymium magnet contains meaningful iron or nickel — a clear warning on supposed 750 gold. The converse proves nothing.

Common mistakes with 750 gold

  • Melting down designer jewellery. The most common and most expensive error. Have identifiable pieces appraised by a jewellery dealer or auction house first.
  • Assuming white gold is inferior. 750 white gold contains exactly as much gold as 750 yellow gold. The grey tone comes from palladium or nickel, not from less gold.
  • Accepting quotes with no rate stated. An offer without the underlying fine gold rate cannot be verified. Ask for the rate per gram of fine gold and check the arithmetic yourself.
  • Ignoring nickel allergies. Older white gold alloys contain nickel. The EU limits nickel release on skin contact; modern jewellery mostly uses palladium. Reactions to inherited pieces often trace back to this.

Frequently asked questions

Specific answers for this fineness.

What does 1 gram of 750 gold cost today?
The current price is shown at the top of this page. It equals the fine gold rate × 0.750 and represents intrinsic value only — before workmanship, VAT or dealer margin.
How much will a buyer pay for 750 gold?
Reputable German buyers pay 88–95 % of intrinsic value. The deduction covers refining charges, melt loss and margin. Ten grams of 750 gold contain 7.5 grams of fine gold, less that deduction.
Is white gold worth less than yellow gold?
Not as metal. 750 white gold contains exactly 75 % gold, just like 750 yellow gold, and buyers pay the same for both. Differences arise only in jewellery value and manufacturing cost.
Does 750 gold have to be hallmarked in Germany?
No. Under German law marking is voluntary — unlike the UK with its compulsory hallmarking system. A missing stamp is therefore no indication of a fake, but no guarantee either.
Do I pay VAT when buying 750 jewellery?
On new goods yes, 19 %. The investment gold exemption under § 25c UStG covers only bars from 995/1000 and qualifying bullion coins, not jewellery. On pre-owned goods a dealer may apply the margin scheme.
Why is 18 karat used for wedding rings?
Because 75 % gold is the best compromise: a rich gold tone, enough hardness for decades of daily wear, good workability and secure stone settings. Fine gold would be too soft; 585 has a paler tone.

Methodology and updates

The fine gold rate comes from the international spot market in US dollars per troy ounce and is converted to euro using the EUR/USD reference rate. The page refreshes the rate every minute while open.

Alloys below 999 are not quoted separately; their price is the fine gold rate multiplied by the fineness. Premium, dealer margin and refining charges are explicitly not included and are shown in a separate section.

Alloy, density and hardness figures are nominal values for common yellow-gold alloys. Real pieces deviate by a few percent depending on the silver, copper and zinc content.
